Differentials

INTERCHANGE

The most common reason for changing differentials is for a different final drive ratio. Firstly there are a few different differentials used in Commodores.

VB, VC and VH 4 cyld's use a light duty 3.90:1 ratio diff. 4 cyld vehicles have a different stud pattern to other models.
VB, VC, VH and early VK 6 cyld's use a light duty diff available in several ratios. 2.78:1, 3.08:1, 3.36:1, 3.55:1
Late VK 6cylds use a Borg-Warner diff, available 3.23:1 ratio. VL 6cylds also use a Borg-Warner diff, but is wider than the VK version. These came in 3.45:1 ratio, and rarely in 3.23:1 (as an option)
VN, VP, VR and VS also use a Borg-Warner, they are wider than the VL, and are most commonly 3.08:1 ratio.

VB, VC, VH and VK 5.0ltrs use a heavy-duty 10 Bolt differential, and are all interchangeable. They can also be fitted to VL V8's, but the tail shaft will need to be changed. These came in 2.60:1, 2.78:1, 3.08:1, 3.36:1 and apparently a 3.55:1 was an option. Early Holden 1 tonne V8 utilities used a 10-bolt diff with 4.44:1 ratio. This gear option can be fitted to 10 bolt differentials from VB-VK, and will provide increased take-off speed but lower top end speed.

VL V8's and turbo's are a Borg-Warner diff, but are internally stronger than the 6cyld version. These are known as 4 pinion differentials. Some V8's are L.S.D. and came in 3.08:1 ratio. Turbo differentials where all L.S.D. and came in 3.45:1 ratio. These diffs can be used in earlier models, but tail shafts must be changed to suit.

VN onwards V8's have a 4 pinion Borg-Warner differential and are L.S.D. (Limited Slip Differential).

The diff centres in all model Commodores, are not removable as a centre. They dismantle into separate parts and therefore require re-adjustment and set-up to be reinstalled into a diff housing. This is an expert procedure and should not be taken on lightly.

INDEPENDANT REAR SUSPENSION

Vehicles with I.R.S. (Independent Rear Suspension) are completely different to the standard model differentials, and do not fit in, unless you want to cut the back end of the car off and weld on a I.R.S. rear. VQ Statesmans were the first to have IRS, and the diff centre used in VQ, VP, VR and VS are interchangable. VT onwards change the position of the oil filler plug from the main cast housing to the rear alloy diff plate. VQ have a norrower track than VR and VS, and it is common to change the VQ arm assemblies for the VR or VS ones for easier mag selection and rim offset. The picture below shows VR and VS on the left, and VQ on the right.
