All EFI Commodores have an electronic fuel pump. VL Commodores have 2, 1 being a primer pump (located inside the fuel tank) and the other being the main fuel pump (located above the fuel tank in the axle well).
VN Commodores have either 1 or 2 pumps, not all came out with the external main pump, some only had an internal main pump. The high pressure internal fuel pump is capable of providing fuel at more than 575 kpa, but is regulated between 235 and 320 kpa. VP onwards use an internal high pressure pump.
Turbo VL's and V8 EFI's use a higher volume fuel pump, than those used on standard 6cylds, so in modified engined vehicles, it may be beneficial to use the V8 style pump. These V8 pumps can also be mounted into other model Commodores, to improve fuel supply.
Naturally aspirated engines (carb) use a lot less pressure (e.g. 40 kpa) than fuel injected engines, which run around 270 kpa, therefore an EFI fuel pump cannot be used on a carburetted engine.
There are many aftermarket race pumps available, e.g. Holley, Paxton, Barry Grant, Aeromotive etc. Depending on the PSI and GPH (gallons per hour) rating, a regulator may be required. A modified engine that produces high Hp/Kw and/or high revs will require improved fuel supply. With larger fuel delivery systems, larger fuel lines will be required throughout the car. The hose used must be compatible to the pressure of the system, and it is also advisable to use good quality fittings to reduce the chance of leaks.
