VS Commodore Gearbox Issues
Phoenix Mechanical
Soaring

Gear Lever noise (manual) - Gear noise may be transfered to the gear lever while driving, or during gear changes. Revised gear levers were introduced which had a softer dampener.

Code 72 - Intermittent Vehicle Speed error (V8) - The vehicle speed sensor in a VS V8 automatic is a magnetic induction type sensor. The original routing of the PCM harness was positioned to close to the ignition system (coil, distributor, leads etc), which could induce an abnormal voltage to the Vehicle Speed Sensor. Re-routing the PCM harness down the left side of the transmission (instead of along the transmission dipstick tube on the right side) is suggested, but this requires the harness to be partially removed, stripped and retaped, so that it can be re-routed.

CLUTCH FLUID RESERVOIR CAP - Some clutch master cylinder caps failing by cracking (with the top of the cap cracking where it attaches to the threaded section of the cap). A revised cap was introduced mid 2000.

Clutch Master Cylinder Cap and Seal – Part number 92144027

Torque converter - VS automatics use a lockup torque converter which acts like a 5th gear (overdrive). Through heat or excessive strain, these converters can distort, which causes driveline vibrations at between 1500 and 1800 rpm. Excessive strain and heat can be caused by heavy towing without a transmission cooler, or by lack of transmission servicing. Replacement is the most common method of repair.

Mount - The gearbox rubber mount is bolted to the transmission housing by 2 Allen head bolts. These bolts work loose, which allows the transmission to move independently of the mount, which can result in driveline vibrations during acceleration. Replacement bolts should be torqued and loctited in place to reduce the chance of recurrence.
