VT Commodore Brake Issues
Phoenix Mechanical
Soaring
LHF ABS Sensor - During excessive suspension movement while turning, the left front ABS sensor lead may contact the sway bar link rod. This can cause the lead to become damaged, stretched or disconnected. The ABS warning lamp on the instrument panel will illuminate if damage or disconnection occurs. A retaining clip was introduced late 1999 to limit the leads movement.

Front disc brakes - The type of brake pad used in the first of the VT's, caused brake vibration and premature wear. This was rectified by GMH changing the brake brand, in mid 99. Many vehicles have required new discs and pads, or disc machining. Incorrect disc machining procedures may cause brake vibrations and premature wear. Brake pedal pulsation is one of the first signs that the brake rotors are suffering from run-out, and need to be machined.

Hand Brake Scrape - Intermittent scraping noises may be heard from the rear of the car while driving. The noise may appear to go away after re-applying hand brake lever. The front lining of the hand brake shoe may contact the inner drum of the rear disc without the hand brake being applied. In mid 2004, a spring was added into production to centralise the park brake shoe in the drum, and reduce the chance of contact when the hand brake is not applied.

Front Brake Hubs - VT's have front brake hubs independent of the disc rotor. (E.g. the disc can be removed while the hub (including bearings and studs) remains attached to the strut.) Ideally these are more durable and can handle more load. Unfortunately when these bearings wear (either through age or knocking the occasional gutter) they can not be replaced on their own, as the front hubs are only available as a complete unit. Worn hub bearings may produce a groaning noise which can vary with speed and cornering. Front brake hubs are different between ABS and Non ABS.

Brake Line Rattles - During ABS operation, the brake pipes located near the fire wall can vibrate or rattle, which may be heard from inside the vehicle. Extra brake line support clips can be added to reduce brake line movement.
