VY Commodore Engine Issues
Phoenix Mechanical
Soaring
Oil Leak (V6) - An oil leak may develope on the front edge of the timing cover, next to the oil filter. This may be caused by the oil filter adapter, due to an insufficient surface area for one of the retaining bolts. Because of this, oil may track past one of the retaining bolts, and leak out from the rh lower timing cover retaining bolt. A revised oil filter adapter was released mid 2004, which had a greater surface area for the bolt heads to seal against.

Oil filter Adaptor assembly - Part number 92067787

Rough Idle or Hissing Noise (Gen III) - Some Gen III's may experience rough idle, a high pitched hissing noise and the engine chack lamp illuminates on the dash. The PCV (positive cranckcase ventilation) pipe may deteriorate, perish and fail causing these problems. A revised PCV pipe made of more durable material was released. This only applies to Series I VY's, as the Series II version has a different PCV system.

PCV Pipe – Part number 12590632

Exhaust Rattles Gen III - The front exhaust pipe heat shields (long type) fitted to Series II VY's can rattle if the internal insulator pads become detached. In late 2003, short type heat shields were introduced, along with under floor reflective foil insulators. Early in 2004, the front exhaust pipe heat shields and foils were removed in favour of floor mounted bolt on heat shields.

Short type heat shield kit RH (contains 2 halves and 4 nuts) - Part number 92210214

Short type heat shield kit LH (contains 2 halves and 4 nuts) - Part number 92210217

Self adhesive reflective foil - Part number 92056511

Exhaust Tips - Some VY V6's (S, Berlina, Calais) may have the exhaust outlet chrome extension misaligned
in the rear bumper facia opening, placing the exhaust outlet on an angle or offset to one side. Revised rear mufflers were introduced late 2002 to correct alignment issues.

Belt Squeal (V6) - Some engines may develope a belt squeal or squeak while idling. A cause for this can be the power steering pump pulley hub has not been pressed onto the power steering pump far enough. This can cause the power steering pulley to be misaligned with the other pulleys resulting in belt squeal/squeak.

Belt Squeal (SC V6) - The supercharger belt may squeal or chirp during cold start conditions, if the belt is old or if the pulleys are misaligned.

Supercharger Drive Belt - Part number 92067829
